Software Engineer/Research Scientist

FTE: 100% Annual Salary: $40,000 to $55,000 plus benefits depending on education, experience and skills. This position is funded from an agency external to Wright State University and is therefore contingent on the agency's continued support at a full level of funding throughout the duration of the appointment.

Job Purpose: To assist in two projects that involve statistical machine learning and/or Natural Language Process techniques and the annotation of sensor data on the Web to manage situation awareness. Initial work will involve software development for the following two projects. Project 1 involves text processing and knowledge-gathering applications involving statistical machine learning and/or Natural Language Processing (NLP) techniques. Project 2 is a Semantic Sensor Web project involving the annotation of sensor data on the Web in order to provide advanced integration, query, and reasoning over sensor observations in order to manage situation awareness. Assist in the creation and maintenance of the necessary datasets and infrastructure for the massive amount of data collected using an open-source Sensor Web framework and sensor data from MesoWest.

Required Qualifications: Education: BS with one year of related experience or MS; Programming; Java, JavaScript, PHP, Data encoding, XML, HTML, Relational Databases; Technologies: Basic Linux experience (SSH, list/copy/move files, text processing - grep, etc.), Shell scripting, Indexing, e.g. Lucene; Conceptual: Data modeling/knowledge representation essentials, Machine learning, NLP, Statistical models

In addition to the above qualifications, Research Scientist should have a Ph.D. or completion of Ph.D. within three months of hire and demonstrated research experience.

Preferred Qualifications: Demonstrated open source software development experience; Programming: Javascript frameworks (Prototype, Mootools, JQuery, etc.), experience with processing information in large scale, Hadoop; Data encoding: RDF/RDFS, OWL; Technologies: JENA, Protege, Knowledge Representation APIs
