Abstract

We present a semantic web principles and technology enabled framework for addressing digital data challenges relevant to Materials Genomics Initiative. Specifically this paper presents supports for and prototypes to (i) integrate different legacy Materials vocabularies, (ii) annotate documents using the unified vocabulary, and (iii) enable convenient elicitation of relevant materials knowledge from domain experts. We have also adapted our iExplore tool to visualize and navigate materials related semantic web data. Further, in order to permit extraction of specific biomaterials knowledge, we have developed pattern-based extraction rules and an annotation tool that can work on technical papers in PDF format. Our work exploits a recently proposed technique for annotating semantic web triples (using singleton property) that can associate provenance and access control information succinctly.
